Established in 2007, the purposes for which the organization was formed are exclusively charitable, and include providing support for intellectual property owners, particularly in the context of the Internet and concerning the publication of right holder data and licensing information, in addition to providing access to information and legal services related to international intellectual property administration, enforcement and dispute resolution.

 

To these ends, the Virtual Intellectual Property Organization:

 

(a) Encourages and support the registration of intellectual property that is created within or for use within virtual environments, such as Internet based websites, clouds, worlds, games, and the like by conducting lectures and seminars on the subject and through publications, forums, and workshops;

 

(b) Exerts a progressive influence on the issues concerning content creation, transfer and labeling in web based or virtual environments;

 

(c) Maintains registries of intellectual property rights that relate to these purposes;

 

(d) Provides legal services in the area of intellectual property; and

 

(e) Conducts any and all other activities as shall from time to time be found appropriate in connection with the foregoing and as are permitted by the Certificate of Incorporation of the Organization and lawful for a corporation which is organized under the Massachusetts Not-For-Profit Corporation Law and is qualified as exempt from taxation under section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, as amended, or any successor provision thereto.

 

All funds whether acquired by gift or contribution or otherwise, shall be devoted to said purposes.
